"Fact meets fiction; the aged meets modernity.
In Retrograde, Lawrence Sumulong uses digital prints, videos, and poetry to walk us through his family's hotel. Portraying stories both real and imagined through the purposely antiquated aesthetics of polaroids and VHS recordings, Sumulong creates a dark, fantastical funhouse for viewers to explore. The images are vivid but ghostly–blurred and distorted with more glitches than colors.
Sumulong constructs a modern articulation of local folkloric riddles--stories taken from different dialects, laced with his own ideas and memories. The project is Sumulong’s unmoored network of past and present. A lobby, where allegory and personal myth-making meet."
